Line-up

Turn Back, the band's third studio album, was a return to a classic sextet format and it was a more consistent, more powerful effort that had a more grittier edge. The edgier sound of Turn Back reflected the maturation in the group. The drummer Bobby Kimball's increasing proficiency was evident in the vocal delivery of Joseph Williams, who had grown more confident and mature. Keyboardist David Paich's work also was more refined, sharper, and less derivative than previously recorded recordings.

After touring to promote their album, the group recorded their Amsterdam live performance that was released on Eagle Records as a 2-CD set titled Falling In Between. The group released a new studio album a few months after, and went on a world tour to promote the album. During this time, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes filled in for Paich, and bassist David Hungate left the group to spend more time with his family.

In 1998, Paich & Lukather began exploring old tapes and demos to discover songs that had never been recorded prior to. It was completed as a double album titled Then and Now in 2001. It was the first album by the band without the single track "A". The album also included a previously unreleased track titled "Kari-Anne".

By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The fourth album, Old Is New, was a commercial failure, and singer Williams suffered from a bad case of laryngitis which limited his singing capabilities. Hungate also returned to Nashville and Leland Sklar's drumming was replaced by Shem Von Schroeck.
