Line-up

The band's third album, Turn Back, marked a return to the classic sextet style of previous albums and was a more powerful, consistent effort that had an edge that was stronger than Hydra. The edgier sound of Turn Back reflected the maturation in the group. Drummer Bobby Kimball's increased proficiency was evident in the vocals of Joseph Williams, who had become more confident and mature. David Paich's keyboard work was also more sophisticated, sharper and less akin to previous recordings.

After touring to promote the album, the band recorded a live performance in Amsterdam which was released as a set of two CDs entitled Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. The studio album came out just a few months later and the group embarked on a world-wide tour to promote the album. In this time keyboardist Greg Phillinganes filled in for Paich and bassist David Hungate left the group to spend more time with his family.
