Line-up

Turn Back, the band's third studio album is an ode to the classic sextet structure, and an even more consistent and powerful effort that had a more grittier edge. The more experimental sound of Turn Back reflected the development of the group. Drummer Bobby Kimball's increased proficiency was evident in the vocals of Joseph Williams, who had grown more confident and mature. Keyboardist David Paich's work also was more refined, sharper and less cloned previously recorded efforts.

After touring to promote their album, the band recorded the band's Amsterdam live show which was released on Eagle Records as a 2-CD set titled Falling In Between. The studio album came out just a few months later and the band embarked on a long-distance tour in support of it. During this time keyboardist Greg Phillinganes filled in for Paich, and bassist David Hungate left the group to spend more time with his family.

In 1998, Paich and Lukather started searching through old demos and tapes in search of a new record featuring songs that were never recorded before.
