Despite the turbulence, Toto forged ahead and released Isolation that was not as successful as IV. However, the band still was able to release a chart-topping album in 1992, Kingdom of Desire. The album was the last of Toto's lineup and the debut of Simon Phillips, a new singer.

Line-up

Turn Back, the band's third studio album it was an ode to the traditional sextet style and it was a more consistent, more powerful album with a sharper edge. Its more punk-rock sound was indicative of the maturation of group and included drummer Bobby Kimball's improved proficiency on the drums, as well as a more mature, confident vocal delivery by singer Joseph Williams. David Paich's keyboard skills were also more sophisticated, sharper, and less derivative on earlier efforts.

After touring to promote the album, the band recorded a live performance in Amsterdam that was released as a two-CD set entitled Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. The studio album came out shortly after, and the group embarked on an extensive world tour in support of the album. During this time, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes replaced Paich and bassist David Hungate quit the group to spend time with his family.

In 1998, Paich and Lukather started searching through old tapes and demos for a new record featuring songs that were never recorded before. It was released as a double album titled Then & Now in 2001. It was the first album in the band's history that did not include a single song with the word "A" in its title. It also included one previously not released track, "Kari-Anne".

By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The group's fourth record, Old Is New was not a commercial success and vocalist Williams was suffering from laryngitis that affected his singing abilities. Additionally, Hungate returned to Nashville, while drummer Leland Sklar was replaced by Shem von Schroeck.

Downes and the other members of Asia--Wetton, Palmer, and Howe--convened an event in England in the beginning of 2006 to discuss the possibility of formally restructuring the band. The lineup, with the exception of Howe who was working with Yes during that period, was later renamed Toto XIV. They toured extensively.

In 2010, the band reunited for another reunion tour with a slightly different line-up, including guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather, drummer John Pierce, bassist Shannon Forrest, and multi-instrumentalists Warren Ham and Dominique Taplin. The band also had a special appearance by singer Michael McDonald and a backing vocalist named Mabvuto Carver.
