They are usually purchased from a dealership or copied by a locksmith. The method of programming the key differs by manufacturer and involves turning the key to the on position, without triggering the engine, and then taking it off it after a specific time period.

Transponder Codes

The name implies that a transponder sends out an encoded signal that contains an eight-digit number code whenever it is interrogated by air traffic control. The signal is referred to as a SQUAWK code and it is the basis for aircraft identification on radar screens. It can also be used to relay a specific message to the air traffic control system in a crisis or to notify controllers to changes in weather conditions. Squawk codes are commonly utilized to communicate with ATC in situations where the pilot cannot communicate via radio. They are essential for safe flying.

Every aircraft has a transponder that responds to radar interrogation by identifying a code. This enables ATC to identify an aircraft that is surrounded by screens.
