Claire, our tester, was impressed with the packaging. It was easy to open and clean. She found it to be among the simplest and most efficient pieces of baby equipment to put together. She took it out for a spin around some rough terrain and was extremely pleased with its performance.

Seats

The majority of triple buggies start life as single pushchairs, but some can convert to take a second seat or carrycot with adapters (these are usually more common in tandem buggies). Certain models let you add an extra board to older children who are ready to walk, but require a little help.

If you're looking for a lightweight option that is ideal for city streets, take a look at the Joie Evalite Duo. It's easy to move, and it has a large basket that is full of storage. It can be used for twins beginning at birth and will accept two car seats, or a carrycot with seat. The seats must face toward the forward direction and there isn't room to store a shopping bag under the seat. You will require a sidepack.

If you like to take off-road trips and off-road, the Mountain Buggy Duet is a good option. It's a side-by-side with the smallest footprint of any double buggy on the market. This allows it to pass through doors with narrow openings and on public transport, and also allows you to go up and down kerbs without much trouble. The adjustable handlebar comes with an additional handbrake for safety and security.

The UPPAbaby Vista 2 double is a lightweight option that can be used by twins or a toddler and a baby. The seats have a multi-position reclining with UPF 50+ sunshades. The canopy can be adjusted to ensure that the sun does not reach your child's eyes. The Vista 2 can be converted into a triple by adding UPPAbaby’s 'PiggyBack’ board for older children.

The iCandy Orange is one of the most popular double buggies that are available, thanks to its superb comfort. It is a true all-terrain vehicle, with soft suspension to make smooth work of bumpy surfaces. It can accommodate up to 30 seating configurations and includes a built-in ride-on for older kids who prefer walking plus a 'cinema seating' mode that raises the back of the seat for better visibility.

The phil&teds dots are fantastic single buggys that are easily modified to take two (or three!) different configurations. This is particularly helpful if you have an infant in a car seat because the frame can be fitted with a wedgie that allows for optimal lying flat, or car seat adapters for many brands.

Suspension

The suspension of a double 3 wheel running stroller-wheel buggy will determine the ease with which you and your child/children are able to push it. A smooth ride is crucial since babies can feel every bump in the road, especially when it's on rough terrain such as grass or unpaved paths. Certain models come with locking front tires that help maneuver and get over obstacles like curbs.

Some models come with air-filled tyres, which provide a fantastic all terrain 3 wheel stroller-terrain ride, but can be susceptible to punctures, therefore, make sure you have spares in the trunk. Other models use gel or foam tyres, designed to withstand bumps and are less prone to punctures however, you may feel a bit stiff and uncomfortable for your child's back should you choose to jog.

MFM reviewer Kath put the Urban Glide 2 through its trials with her newborn and 3 year old, and found that it was able to handle difficult terrain: "it navigated effortlessly over pavements that were bumpy and grassy dirt tracks, cobbles and cobbles effortlessly and was easy to manoeuvre around corners and get up and down kerbs. Many are awed by the storage capacity of a 3 wheel double buggy. Some models like the Roma Atlas offer a generously-sized basket and 2 handy zip pockets on the hood to keep your phone and keys easily accessible. It is also designed to be able to handle a little rough terrain making it a good option for family walks or all-terrain strolls.

Other models such as the UPPAbaby Vista 2 offer plenty of space, and the ability to carry twins or a baby and a toddler (it uses their 'PiggyBack' boards to make this possible). It's the slimmest side-by-side double on the market and it comes with some amazing technology that includes games-changing LED lights on each side of the frame to ensure safety in dim lighting conditions.

For something a little different and unique, the Joie Evalite Duo is a lightweight buggy that can seat twins from birth (it's world-facing and has a lie flat position). The clever frame can be expanded to accommodate the extra seat but it still only weighs about 11kg, which makes it easy to move and lift. It can also be used with an infant car seat or carrycot, so you can get the best of both worlds and it will help your budget in the future since you don't need to purchase a new buggy right away.
